Going “Hygge”

“Let’s do a modern design with a nod to the past”. I say this so often that my clients say this phrase back to me.

A nod to the past is the warm coziness you feel when you walk into a room. It’s the Danish word I love, but can barely pronounce, hygge. Which google defines as “a mood of cozy contentment, safety, and well-being achieved through enjoying the simple, everyday pleasures of life.”

Doesn’t that sound delightful?!

Modern design to me is ingenious inventions & clever solutions. Like.

For efficiency. Soft closing drawers. Full extension drawers. Trash recycling composting drawer. Knee open & close trash drawers. Bi-fold doors. Sliding doors. Tambour doors. Pocket doors. Motion sensor lighting. Charging drawers.

For small kitchens. Hidden in-wall storage. Convenient open shelving (it’s okay to show off your daily dishes, just a few is just fine). Hidden wall spice rack.

For my petite clients. Toe kick drawers. Rolling ladders. Built-in hidden stools.

For my clients with kids & pets & Denis the menace husbands. Wire brush hardwood floors. Luxury vinyl planks. Rounded corners. Step stools hooks.

Doesn’t that sound easier?!

Our schedules are so dang packed we often forget why we are here. But that’s too heavy for this post. I just want to make every home as hygge as possible. I can’t lighten your busy lives, but I can make it more lovely. I can make the chaos feel quieter. More simple. More efficient. More modern with a nod to the past.
